the U-shaped body supported on tall splayed legs, cast around the exterior with a taotie band divided by three vertical blunt flanges and a leonine-headed loop handle, a two-character inscription under the handle, repeated on the interior

Provenance

Collection of Maurice Gauvreau (1913-2000), Montreal, Canada, acquired while traveling in China as a Foreign Services officer in the 1930s.

Condition

There are nicks along the edges, surface scratches and other signs of age-related wear. There is a shallow dent to the rim with a resultant shallow crack, and there is oxidation and encrustation on the interior and on the base. There is a serial number written on the base in white pigment.
