Description
- Tiffany Studios
- Pair of Jeweled "Turtle-Back" Wall Sconces
- leaded glass, favrile glass and patinated bronze
Condition
Overall in very good condition. These lights were likely intended by Tiffany Studios to function as flush-mounted ceiling lights; however their mounting system allows them to be used as either wall sconces or ceiling lights. By all accounts these sconces have originated through time as a pair, as the coloration of their glass and patinas are entirely consistent. The inset Turtle-Back tiles and inset jewels on both sconces appear original and undisturbed. One sconce with a horizontal hairline crack to the central Turtle-Back tile, which has recently been stabilized by a professional Tiffany conservator. Both sconces with two hairline cracks to the surrounding leaded glass panels, and one hairline to one of the side recessed favrile glass panels, all recently stabilized. The patinated bronze surfaces throughout show rubbing, some occasional minor areas of patina loss, and with some scattered traces of surface oxidation and minor discolorations consistent with age and gentle use. With surface soiling to the recessed areas of the reticulated design along the sides of the sconce mounts. Please note that there are favrile glass tiles inset beneath the reticulated side elements on all four sides of the mounts which are not clearly visible in the catalogue illustrations. Both sconces retain their original wall-mounted electric sockets which both retain an old Christies paper label inscribed NYCCE/539. A rare opportunity to acquire a pair of this exceedingly rare design. When viewed firsthand the sconces display beautifully with strong visual presence. The exterior surfaces of the Turtle-Back tiles and inset jewels are beautifully iridized, imparting the sconces with strong luminous color. When viewing the sconces firsthand they appear slightly less red in coloration than seen in the catalogue illustration.
