Literature

Alastair Duncan, Art Nouveau Furniture, New York, 1982, p. 108, pl. 42 (for a related dressing table)

Condition

Overall very good condition. The woods used to execute this work display rich figuring and a highly saturated color palette, slightly blonder than in the catalogue illustration. The surfaces with some light scratches and minor discolorations, consistent with age and gentle use. The joints of the desk display minor and sensitively undertaken restoration. The pearwood veneer panels with evidence of light restoration which has been sensitively undertaken and visible only under close inspection. The back of the desk with additional sensitive restoration, including infill to veneer losses. The desk presents with two lateral retracting extensions and two smaller retracting extensions to the front. Each extensions is in good condition and reveals rich figuring similar to the top surface of the desk. The proper right retracting extension with a minor wood replacement at the handle. The mounts with minor rubbing to the surface, shallow scratches and minute abrasions consistent with age and gentle use. The glass top appears to be replaced and presents with minor surface scratches consistent with age and gentle use and a minor chip to the proper left back corner. The glass top si well fit and allows one to use the desk without concern of damage to the pearwood panels. A wonderful Art Nouveau design showing the sinous and sculptural forms of the period. A very rare work by Gaillard to appear at auction.
