Description

  • Tiffany Studios
  • A Rare Jardinière
  • impressed TIFFANY STUDIOS/NEW YORK/4696
  • favrile glass and patinated bronze

Literature

Alastair Duncan, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2007, p. 396, no. 1607 (for the present example illustrated)

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The patinated bronze surfaces throughout display a particularly rich russet brown and dark green patina, showing gentle rubbing and minor surface soiling to the recessed areas of the motif consistent with age and gentle use. All of the molded favrile glass shells appear original and intact, showing some occasional minor surface imperfections inherent in the making. A few of the shells with some very light surface scratches and gentle rubbing to the outermost contours of the design. One shell with a minor surface irregularity (possibly an old restoration) at the upper left edge where the tile meets the bronze, only visible under very close inspection. One shell with a minor hairline crack extending from the right edge, approximately 1/2 inch and stable. The exterior surfaces of the shells are beautifully iridized, displaying strong luminous color. The jardinière retains its original interior liner, which is integral to the design and not removable. The interior with a few light surface scratches and minor discolorations consistent with age and very gentle use. The underside of the base with traces of tape residue and old felt pads along the perimeter. A stunning example of this exceedingly rare design. The jardinière has strong sculptural presence and would serve as a spectacular centerpiece display.

This impressively scaled jardinière, inset with molded favrile glass shells set against an elaborate bronze ground of interlacing strap work, is one of only two examples presently known of the model.
