Condition
Canvas has an old relining. Picture is dirty and would respond well to a cleaning. Uv light confirms that painting is under an old dirty and milky varnish. No retouches are visible beneath or above the varnishes except for a few small ones around the top right edge, likely from older frame abrasion. The sky has been pressed somewhat but overall the picture should brighten considerably with a surface clean. In a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note
As a painter of moonlit and winter scenes, Aert Van der Neer was one of the most important landscape artists of his day. The present picture is a fine and characteristic example of his much admired nocturnal landscapes and beautifully illustrates his talent in rendering light and capturing the subtle definitions of atmosphere—a skill which ensured the development of his reputation. Here, a full moon shines through a break in the thick clouds, illuminating the soft colors of the night sky and the peaceful river scene below. A few figures animate the foreground as a group folds a fishing net and another figure sits in a boat nearby. Quaint houses peak through the lush trees at left, various rafts and boats with lowered sails are docked along the shore, and a canal sweeps diagonally across the composition toward the horizon and the silhouette of a distant townscape.
The earliest among these types of landscapes date from the mid-1640s, but van der Neer was continually occupied by this genre throughout his career, varying the townscapes, figures, and light effects accordingly. Despite the many nocturnes that comprise his oeuvre, each one is uni𓂃que and carefu൲lly rendered.
