Unlined. Horizontal stretcher bar mark visible in upper register, widely patterned, stable craquelure in the sky. Under UV: Areas of restoration throughout landscape, including a 1.5 inch area at lower right. Pindots and dashes of inpainting in figure. Some strengthening to signature at lower left.

The present work likely dates from the beginning of Helleu’s career, circa 1880, and the model for this knitting young woman is Marie Renard – who frequently modeled for the artist as well as many of his contemporaries.
