Catalogue Note
The Danish artist, Gerda Wegener, trained at the Kunstakademi in Copenhagen, later settling in Paris where she exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. Wegener painted members of her glamorous Parisian social circle, and she executed this elegant portrait of a woman in Paris in 1928, the same year as one of her masterpieces, Hjerterdame (Queen of Hearts), which includes a likeness of Lili Elbe. The artist’s life was recently documented in the film The Danish Girl, with an Academy Award winning performance by Alicia Vikander.
