Catalogue Note
This demure and youthful female is a classic example of the large free-standing stone figures which comprise one of the most important artistic expressions of ancient Costa Rican art. Made during the 1st millenium, the figures were public sculptures defining societal roles. Male figures typically featured warfare and ritual sacrifice with the trophy-head cult. Fertility and sexuality are shown in the "breast display" female figures (Jones, Kan and Snarskis 1981:131, cat. nos. 220, 221).
