Catalogue Note

Dr Monni Adams graduated from Columbia with a master’s in art history and received a doctorate in Indonesian art history from Columbia in 1967. She lectured at Harvard, MIT, Columbia, and Wellesley College, and published widely, including what remains the last comprehensive work on the historiography on African art History, "African Visual Arts from an Art Historical Perspective", African Studies Review, 1987. Constantly questioning and seeking, Monni Adams' last work, 'Locating the Mano Mask', African Arts, Summer 2010, vol. 43, no. 2, pp. 16-37, written at the age of 89, returned to her extensive research on the Liberian masks collected in the 1930–40s by the medical missionary Dr. George W. Harley, and sought to understand the "strange" fading of Mano masks from exhibitions, field research, and scholarly discourse.
