Catalogue Note

There are some tantalizing, though not definite, similarities between this carving of Noah's Ark and the early work of John Haley Bellamy.  James A. Craig—author of American Eagle: The Bold Art and Brash Life of John Haley Bellamy—states that "an argument can be made that this piece might be an early carving executed during his (Bellamy's) childhood, or that this piece was crafted by a fellow apprentice at Samuel Dockum's workshop." By the same token, it might be a happy coincidence.
