overall condition is excellent with tiny traces of the original gilding, wear and bullet holes, retains original verdigris surface

Catalogue Note

While there are other owl vanes known, even some others in a similar arrangement, most of them are later and this is perhaps only one of two known in this scale.  Owls are believed to have often been used on libraries, signifying the wisdom gained through diligent reading.
