Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Very old losses along the edge of the spoon, as visible in the catalogue illustration. Beautiful layered encrusted dark patina.

Catalogue Note
Au même titre que les cuillers anthropomorphes, celles ornées - comme ici - d'une tête d'animal, étaient des insignes d'autorité décernés en pays Dan et We à la femme la plus hospitalière d'un village ou d'un quartier. Infiniment plus rares, elles « symbolisent les animaux domestiques abattus lors des grandes fêtes et offerts en cadeau aux convives » (Fischer et Himmelheber in Falgayrettes-Leveau, Cuillers-Sculptures, 1991, p. 81).
Cette cuiller Wa ke mia (« fête agir cuiller ») à figure de bélier se distingue par l'élégance de la tête fuselée et la superbe dynamique des formes accentuée par les effets de la patine profonde, légèrement croûteus🅷e,ꦉ attestant de sa grande ancienneté.
