Condition
Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Thickly applied ritual patina to the upper part of the hammer becoming smoother and more polished on the figure itself with beautiful brown tones.

Dans le corpus des idiophones lawle, dont le son accompagnait en particulier les sorties nocturnes du masque guli à tête de buffle (représenté au sommet), les œuvres sculptées d'un personnage - ici féminin - sont très rares. Voir Vogel (Baule. African Art, Western Eyes, 1997, p. 152) pour celui appartenant autrefois à Helena Rubinstein. Ici s'ajoute le caractère exceptionnel du surmodelage rituel venant estomper les détails de la sculpture délicate et signifiant selon toute vraisemblance son appartenance à un devin.
