Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. The figure has kept all the added decorative attributes. Beautiful dark reddish patina throughout.

Catalogue Note
Illustrée en couverture de l'ouvrage que Christoph Krüger dédia aux poupées Dowaya et Namji du Cameroun, cette statuette témoigne au plus haut degré de l'invention qui singularise ce célèbre corpus. Tout en puissance, le corps résumé à ses lignes essentielles disparaît sous l'opulente parure multicolore - véritable coque de perles de verre, lanières de cuir et coquillages.
Chez les Dowayo, les femmes « qui se sentaient menacées de stérilité portaient sur le ventre ou le dos de petites poupées bardées de perles et de parures qui représentent l’enfant auquel elles aspirent » (Baeke in Falgayrettes-Leveau, Femmes dans les arts d’Afrique, 2008, p. 224). Sculptées par les forgerons, ces poupées de fécondité étaient ensuite confiées aux femmes qui les décoraient. Ici, la richesse de l'ornementation et les nuances de la patine brillante témoignent des soins multiples qui l🐷ui ont été accordés.
