Description

  • Double-sided sheet of figure studies
  • Black chalk on blue paper (recto and verso)

  • 10 by 14 in.; Framed: 17 1/2 by 21 1/2 in.

Provenance

Hendecourt Collection
Sale, Christie's London, 9th April 1990, lot 21 (as Attributed to Jacopo Robusti, il Tintoretto), where acquired by David Bowie

Condition

The sheet is window mounted. The recto is fully visible and is attached at each corner to the mount, the verso is visible via a window mount. Overall in good condition. There are a few light brown stains both recto and verso. There is a small tear (approximately 2cm long) near the centre of the sheet, located in the shading lines on the torso of the main female figure study. This tear is more visible when held up to the light and is perhaps slightly more noticeable when viewing the verso. The edges of the sheet are uneven. The black chalk remains strong and vibrant both recto and verso and the blue paper has retained its colour. The drawing is framed in a modern black frame to show both sides of the drawing.

Catalogue Note

Stylistically reminiscent of Palma Giovane's early work when he is collaborating with Tintoretto on the decoration of Palazzo Ducale in Venice.
