Description

  • marked on spout and handle mounts with maker's mark and standard, the base apparently unmarked but applied with label MAUBOUSSIN / PARIS
  • gold, cut-crystal, hardstone, diamonds, coral
  • height excluding stopper 10 7/8 in.
  • 27.6 cm
the foot applied with four elephant heads and mounted with coral and onyx cabochons and diamonds, with ribbed gold spout and handle mounts. Together with an associated silver-gilt similar stopper decorated with elephants and moonstones. 2 pieces.

This ewer seems to have been created by Mauboussin between 1975 and 1980 for the African market. Sotheby's is very grateful to Rémi Verlet for his help in the identification of the goldsmith.
