Catalogue Note

David Peters in Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century refers to two services with this pattern: the earlier service, purchased by Louis-Philippe-Joseph, Duc de Chartres, in 1777 is described in the Artists' Ledgers as "guirlande de Roses et Barbeaux"; and the other service, purchased by Brigadier-Général Richard Smith in 1778 is described as "Roses et mirthe"(see pp. 569-570 and 583-584). Although it is difficult to state with certainty to which service the present cooler belongs, it was likely a component of the Duc de Chartres service given the earlier dating. Two similar seaux crénelés, with two adjacent pink roses, is in the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, of which one is illustrated in Jerry E. Patterson, Cooper-Hewitt Museum: Porcelain, p. 66, no. 46. Another, also painted by Tandart, was sold at Christie's Geneva, November 20, 1970, lot 366.
