of oval section with mirror-polished surface, complete with vesta compartment and tinder, the cover with the Order of the Garter engraved and enameled above 'H.M.S. Sultan XMAS - 1878' in blue champlevé enamel, the interior of the hinged lid engraved in English "Commander R.F. Britten from Their Royal and Imperial Highnesses The Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh," 56 standard 

Provenance

Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, was the second son of Queen Victoria; he married in 1874 Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, daughter of Tsar Alexander II.  He was Captain of the H.M.S. Sultan, an ironclad of the British Navy, from 1876 to 1878; Richard F. Britten served as Commander.
