cast and chased as basketwork set with a panel enameled in imitation of a linen towel embroidered with motifs from Central Russian folk art, the plaque inscribed in English 'From the Grand Duke Alexis to Albert Operti,' struck with initials AB in an oval, possibly for Andrei Bragin or a Grachev subcontractor, contained in leather-bound silk- and velvet-lined case of the Imperial jeweler Grachev

Literature

Italian-born American painter Albert Jaspar Ludwig Roccabiglera Operti (1852-1927) achieved acclaim in the 19th century for his Arctic scenes; he was decorated by Grand Duke Alexis (1850-1908) during the latter's 1877 trip to the United States. This case, dated 1885, may be related to Operti's successful exhibition of a monumental canvas showing the rescue of the Greeley expedition at the Navy Department that year. Grand Duke Alexis was by this time General Admiral and head of the Naval Department. See "Picturing Greely's Camp," The New York Times, July 19, 1885, 1.
