Italian-born American painter Albert Jaspar Ludwig Roccabiglera Operti (1852-1927) achieved acclaim in the 19th century for his Arctic scenes; he was decorated by Grand Duke Alexis (1850-1908) during the latter's 1877 trip to the United States. This case, dated 1885, may be related to Operti's successful exhibition of a monumental canvas showing the rescue of the Greeley expedition at the Navy Department that year.
