Catalogue Note
Charles Ferdinand Hürten (1818-1901), a native of Germany, was one of the most acclaimed flower painters in the second half of the 19th century in Europe. After working in independent workshops in Paris and exhibiting in the Paris 1858 exhibition, he was hired by the Copeland factory in 1859, where he worked as a painter until 1897 and created impressive works for several Great Exhibitions. A Copeland vase painted by him and exhibited in the 1862 International Exhibition in London is currently in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number 8022-1862.
