Catalogue Note
The duelling scene is probably inspired by the famous 1892 sword duel between Princess Pauline Metternich and Countess Anastasia Kielmannsegg, supposedly over arrangements for a musical event in Vienna. At the suggestion of the attending physician, Baroness Lubinska, the participants fought topless so that clothing would not get pushed into the wound and turn septic; this of course guaranteed that the event became notorious. The Countess drew first blood, but the Princess has a better hit on her opponent.
