Catalogue Note
The rare craquelure celadon or porcelaine truitée, delighted the 18th century layperson and motivated the marchands-merciers to continually create new artefacts. Our pieces, illustrating the birth of a new classicism are striking and can be distinguished from many celadon pots-pourris or vases with rocaille gilt-bronze mounts. Their innovative shape and the ornament is typical of the "goût grec".
Among similar pieces, one pair of green marble vases can be seen at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, formerly from the Horace Wood Brock collection, with the same gilt-bronze upper part (fig. 1). This element. in reverse format is also used on the lid of a pair of vases from the former D. Riahi collection (fig. 2 ; sale Christie's Londres, 6 December 2012, lot 24).
The similarities between the mounts of these vases allow us to attribute them to the same workshop and probably ordered by a distinct marchand-mercier.
