Condition

The illustration of the catalogue is accurate. There are the inevitable dents, marks and scratches due to age and use. There are restorations to the mahogany : two front legs of the sphinxes have been restored, as well as all the tails; the upper part of the inverted backrests have been restored. The yellow silk is in good condition with minor wears.

Catalogue Note

This pair of armchairs is stamped by the Jacob brothers, François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (1770-1841) and Georges II (1768-1803), who amalgamated between 1796, the date that Georges I ceded the business to his sons, and 1803, the date that Georges II died. The armchairs are part of set comprising canapés, marquises and side chairs with some in private collections and illustrated by C. Bizot in Mobilier Directoire Empire (pp. 36-37 and 40). An armchair is now in the Musée Marmottan in Paris (ill. in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Les ébénistes du XIXe siècle, Paris, 1984, p. 297).
