Description

  • gold, hardstone
Composed of three oval-shaped onyx cameos, one oval-shaped carnelian cameo, one oval-shaped banded agate intaglio and one oval-shaped agate intaglio, length 7½ inches; third quarter of the 19th century.

Condition

In good condition considering the age of the piece. Several of the links between the intaglios and cameos have become pried open over time and the safety chain is not currently usable, both of which can be easily fixed by a jeweler. The descriptions of the images are as follows: the first, an oval chalcedony intaglio with a jugate portrait of two laureate males, one bearded; the second, an oval onyx cameo of a bust of a maenad; the third, an oval banded agate intaglio of a centaur confronting a rearing goat; the fourth, an oval onyx cameo of a bust of Pericles; the fifth, an agate intaglio of Rhea/Rea, wife of Cronus, patroness of fertility and motherhood; the sixth, an oval carnelian cameo of a togate bearded male; the seventh, an onyx bust of Herakles/Hercules. Please note we cannot guarantee the authenticity of the Papal States marks on the clasp. The largest cameo is approximately 1 3/4 inches long and the smallest is approximately 1 inch long.
