Description

covered with repeating panels embossed with a large spiral flower issuing from a vase, surrounded by further flowers and borders of silver-gilt drop motifs, the interior with verre eglomisé panels with inscriptions in Hebrew framed by colorful flowers, together with a pair of inscribed small finials embossed with flowers, 3 pieces

Condition

Small section gallery missing, 2 gilt panels at base missing, losses to panels in the front, wood base probably replaced, the interior has lost its cloth lining.

Catalogue Note

The inscriptions inside read (translated) ”This Tik and Torah within consecrated by Rabbi Sassoon Aaron for the raising up  of the soul of the modest honored woman Tsalcha daughter of Ezekial Judah, may G-d protect him…” with the date 1851.

A similar case showing vases of spiraled flowerheads is in Musée de Cluny, Paris, described as Ottoman, circa 1860, and is illustrated in Treasures of the Jewish Musuem, fig. 51, p. 154. Another is illustrated in Yehuda L. Bialer, Jewish Life in Art and Tradition, dated 1904, p. 105.
