Catalogue Note

With a Panerai guarantee card, special edition certificate, specification booklet and presentation box.

The original 1943 Mare Nostrum prototype, designed for the Italian Navy in a 52 mm diameter case but never produced, used an Angelus 215 chronograph movement within a large case with smooth bezel and stepped dial. Recreated in 1993 (pre-Vendome) with a quartz movement within a 42mm diameter case the 1st generation re-edition maintained the same simple lines of the original while sacrificing a stepped dial and adding a tachometer to the bezel. The model continued lಌimited produced with several variations until the late 1990s when it was discontinued. The second-generation Mare Nostrum, announced in 2008 and released in 2010 as a limited edition of 99 examples, faithfully re-creates the original prototype while being fitted with a modified Minerva based caliber chronograph movement. The present lot numbered 84/99 is a fine example of this coveted reference.
