Catalogue Note

With a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives and fitted box.

Patek Philippe's photo-electric clock was not only among the first civilian uses of solar power, but the first application of this technology in any horological piece. It was also the first freestanding, portable timepiece operated by means other than a traditional mechanical movement. Along with the advent of the electromechanical and🐷 quartz movements, this solar-powered milestone was one of several significant advances in the third quarter of the 20th century that threatened to render mechanical movements obsolete.

While every single piece is a unique work, Patek Philippe's cloisonné enamel dome clocks werཧe created for the motif of the client's request. The present example features the artistry of Madame Luce Chappaz (L. Chappaz as signed on the side of clock), a master enameller whose work appears on several of Patek Philippe's cloisonné dome clocks. The body of the clock depicts the festive and joyful scenes of ‘la Fête des Saisons’ (the Celebration of Seasons) held in Tavannes, Switzerland. This 3-day festival features activities involving theatre, music, film and literature. The lively and bright colours of the enamel portray a convivial picture in which v꧅illagers engage in celebration of the fruitful harvests of the year, spreading the jovial atmosphere to admirers.
