Catalogue Note

With a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives.

Introduced in 1976 as Patek Philippe’s first sports watch, Ref. 3700 has since then conquered the horological world in different metals. Designed by legendary watchmaker Gérald Genta, the Nautilus took design inspiration from nautical portholes and thus named after the Submarine in Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This reference was desc♏ribed in the product li♛terature as "the rugged watch that feels right on every occasion" and lived up to this slogan as for much of its production life.

The presently offered lot, known as the 'Jumbo' Nautilus🥃, is the largest of the vintage Nautilus series. Most frequently recognized as a stainless steel watch, it is relatively rarer to find this reference to be housed in yellow gold case. The use of precious metal adds a subtle touch of luxury to the rugged and sporty model. The exquisite ribbed dials were hand engraved by Stern Frères. Over time, these hand-made dials have developed hue of colour, making each dial unique in a sense. In 1980, Patek Philippe started to create cases and bracelets in their Ateliers Réunis workshops and the Nautilus changed its reference number to the new 3700-11. As a result, the present lot has to be considered as one of the very last ref. 3700/1 manufactured.

Ref. 3700 is illustrated in Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe Wristwatches,🔜 Second Edition, pp. 231-2🎃32.
