  • AN UNUSUAL GOLD AUTOMATON WATCH NO 239 CIRCA 1810
  • pearls, pink gold
  • diameter 56 mm
• 20’’’ gilt movement, two-train, three arm brass balance, the time and automaton movements sandwiched with both sharing a front plate • the six motion automaton consisting of two applied painted figures of a cooper hammering and a carpenter grinding, both flanking a painted fountain with twisting glass rods simulating flowing water, all against a painted ground of a park, activated by a lever to the case band, white enamel dial, Arabic numerals • gold case, both sides glazed, bezels set with pearls 

Condition

The movement is running at time of cataloguing, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. Case in overall good condition with surface wear, scuffing and small scratches to the case and crystal consistent with age and use. Dial in overall fair vintage condition with some light fading to the numeral and outer minute track. Area of discoloration at the winding space near 2. Some material loss at the other winding space at 12. A small area of material loss at the dial edge between 9 and 10. A horizontal hairline fracture between 12 and 2. Some Automaton dial in overall very good condition with rich colors. Some cracking to the paint overall, some areas of material loss toward the outer edges. Automaton functions, however, the character at the right activates inconsistently.
