Condition
Executed on cream wove paper, not laid down and hinged to the mount in three places along the upper edge. All fours edges of the sheet are deckled. The sheet is slightly time-stained and there is some light mount staining due to previous mounting along all fours edges. There are a few scattered faint spots of foxing. There are some areas of paint shrinkage to the thickest pigments at center right. The pigments remain bright and fresh. This work is in overall good condition.

Catalogue Note
The present two works come from the Collection of Marianne Sussman, the granddaughter of Dr Arthur Rosin. Dr Rosin was born in Berlin in 1879 and was President of the Darmstädter Bank in Berlin. He began collecting the work of Lovis Corinth in the 1920s and became a friend and patron of the artist. During the early years of the Nazi regime in Germany, Dr Rosin fled with his wife to Italy and then to South America. They emigrated to New York in 1937, taking their entire collection of works by Corinth with them. Sotheby's had the honour of offering other works by Corinth from Dr Rosin's collection in 2001, including a related work which achieved the all-time record for a Corinth watercolour.
