Catalogue Note

The present work is a study for Maillol's monumental sculpture L'Action enchainée commissioned in the memory of Louis-Auguste Blanqui (1805-1881), the heroic revolutionary and leader of the Blanquist Party, which was absorbed into the French Unified Socialist Party in 1904-05. The first cast of the monument, measuring 210cm high, now stands in the main square of Puget-Thénier, the native town of Blanqui, near Grenoble.
