Catalogue Note

In 1900, Rodin conceived this second variation of his original 1881 Fallen Caryatid Carrying a Stone, substituting an urn for the stone. A caryatid is a sculptural or architectural female form that often appears as a column or pedestal. The term originates from the Greek Karyatides, referencing the women of Karyai who were well-known for their ability to carry heavy reed baskets upon their heads. Unlike the serene architectural caryatids found at the Temple of Erechtheum on the Acropolis, Rodin’s caryatid hunches over in exertion and exhaustion as she bears the full weight of the urn on her shoulders.

There are 14 known casts of the present model: 1 cast was made by Rodin with Alexis Rudier foundry in 1917; Alexis Rudier cast at least a further 3 examples bet༺ween 1925 and 1942, then another 6 examples were cast by the Georges Rudier foundry between 1966 and 1969 and a final 3 examples were made by Émile Godard between 1973 and 1977.
