Condition
The work is in very good condition. Executed on blue-grey wove paper mounted on canvas. The edges are reinforced with tape. Minor skimming to upper left and lower right corners, as well as in the lower left quadrant. A couple faint surface stains, most notably towards the upper and lower right corners. The sheet may be slightly faded but the pigment color is extremely rich.

Catalogue Note
The present work is a daringly modern testament to the influence of Ernst and the European Surrealists on Abstract Expressionism. Painted in 1942, this energetic work predates Pollock's drip paintings and teems with the automatism of Twombly. It is direclty related to a major oil which Ernst gifted to the Tel Aviv Museum of Modern Art (see fig. 1).
