Catalogue Note
The theme of the family group occupied Moore for many years, in particular between 1944-47, when he worked extensively on a commission that eventually came to fruition in 1954-55 as a large stone sculpture for Harlow New Town. The first owner of this drawing was the American-Irish writer Constantine FitzGibbon (1919-1983), who settled in England in 1950 and met Moore when they were neighbors and accompanied the artist on his impactful visit to Auschwitz. FitzGibbon's novels include When the kissing Had to Stop (1960) and High Heroic (1969).
