Catalogue Note
“Given Dufy’s love of poetry, it is not surprising that he was the illustrator for Apollinaire as well as for Mallarmé. Gide and Colette. But his love of music preceded everything else, and shows itself… in the wonderful variations among the music paintings for Bach, Chopin and Debussy, in subsequent years, ending with a new series of exceptional beauty completed just before his deal. Casals loved Dufy’s paintings of music and musicians and said that he could not tell which work the musicians were playing but could always tell the key from the dominant colour of the painting. Stravinsky also loved Dufy’s art, especially the music paintings and, in 1959, composed the Double Cannon for String quartet—Raoul Dufy in memoriam” (Bryan Robertson in Raoul Dufy 1877-1953 : paintings, drawings, illustrated books, mural decorations, Aubusson tapestries, fabric design and fabrics for Bianchini-Férier, Paul Poiret dresses, ceramics, posters, theatre designs (exhibition catalogue), Hayward Gallery, London, 1983-84, p. 54).
