Catalogue Note

Anil Revri, born in New Delhi and based in Washington, D.C., creates fantastical and ordered abstract imagery using a combination of eclectic influences. The confluence of his formal study of interior and graphic design reveals a highly individualistic style, and was clearly instrumental in his meticulous approach to abstract and geometric intention. This work comes from the current period of Revri’s oeuvre, where investigation of form produces works with a spiritual quality and an aura of contemplation. A well-travelled and globally exhibited artist, Revri has incorporated influences from Western form and Eastern philosophy, yet retains many national characteristics and the Indian cultural peculiarities that are sternly important to Revri, and remain at the forefront of this aesthetic. He notes, “[i]nspired by fractal geometry, the work is best described by a quote from Rumi: ‘You dance inside my chest where no one sees you. But sometimes I do, and the sight becomes this art’” (Correspondence with the artist, September 2016). The snaking matrices, fanned lines and vibrating dots exude the serenity and exploration of nature, reflecting on the universal network we are all part of.
“In Revri’s work, your eye, travels into a piece, encounters, beyond natural visual pleasure, a kind of arresting pressure toward an unseen but thoroughly present openness. The work serves as a gateway into a weirdly natural spaciousness: a singularity experience, of a point at which a function takes an infinite value. Again, what we may be looking at is a geometric abstraction, but what we’re receiving is a fiercely voluntary journey into a primal experience of an invisible reality that clearly includes us, not as viewers but as participants”  (J. W. Mahoney in his Essay for Anil Revri’s Retrospective Exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, 2004).
