Condition

The sheet appears to be affixed to the mount with two tabs at the upper horizontal edge. The sheet undulates very slightly towards the upper horizontal edge, but otherwise appears sound. There is some old adhesive and fabric tape visible at the left vertical edge of the sheet, only visible when viewed out of the frame. There are some spots of foxing and studio detritus to the sheet and some discoloration around the edges of the work, most of which is only visible when viewed unframed. Subject to the above, the work appears to be in very good overall condition, with strong, fresh colours throughout. The work is window mounted and presented in a simple gilt wooden frame, held under glass. Please telephone the department on +44 (0) 207 293 6424 if you have any questions regarding the present work.

Catalogue Note

Writing in his unfinished autobiography Chiaroscuro, John recalled the leading society hostess Lady Ottoline Morrell (1870 – 1938) as ‘always prepared to do battle for Culture, Freedom and the People… whatever she may have lacked, it wasn’t courage’. As wife of the Liberal MP Philip Morrell, Lady Ottoline entertained some of the cultural greats of the day, including T.S. Eliot, Picasso and Nijinsky at her home at Garsington Manor near Oxford. John had met Lady Ottoline in the early twentieth century when she lived at 44 Bedford Square and became a regular model as well as lover to the artist. The iconic oil portrait of Lady Ottoline by John is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
