Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dr Roger Cole for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of the present work.

The present work and Maquette for Flower Vase I were modeled in clay by Gaudier-Brzeska as maquettes for stone carvings. The carvings were commissioned by Lady Ian Hamilton in the spring of 1914 through Roger Fry at the Omega Workshops for the entrance hall of her home at 1 Hyde Park Gardens, London. At the outbreak of the First World War, Gaudier enrolled in the French Army and was killed in action in 1915, leaving the stone for the carvings, which had been acquired by Lady Hamilton and delivered to Gaudier's studio, incomplete.  The clay maquette, together with other sculptures, was inherited by Sophie Brzeska and on her death her estate was declared intestate. After the valuation in January 1925 by Wilenski, the estate was stored in the National Gallery, London, where it was seen by Jim Ede. Ede later acquired Maquette for Flower Vase 2 as well as many of Gaudier’s other sculptures, drawings and letters from the estate. In 1934 Ede cast the present work in lead from the plaster, and bronzes were later cast by Fiorini and patinated by Henry Moore in 1964, by R. Rowe in 1964/1965, and by John Mills in 1977.
