Condition
The panel is constructed from a single, uncradled plank which is flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Much of the original impasto remains intact. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals very minimal and sensitive spot retouching in the background and in the tablecloth in the foreground, as well as to a superficial horizontal surface scratch, measuring approx. 5 cm., in the background just to the left of the base of the tazza. In overall very good condition without any need for further intervention.

Catalogue Note
In the centre of the tazza, the panel is signed with den Uyl's signature motif of an owl, which played on the dutch work for owl uil, and was incorporated into almost all of his known works. We are grateful to Fred Meijer for having endorsed the attribution to Jan Jansz. de Uyl the Elder at the time of the 2009 auction, and for suggesting a date of circa 1635.
