Catalogue Note
Giulio de' Medici (1478–1534) is depicted here twice, on the right as a young cardinal (a role to which he was appointed in 1513 by his cousin Pope Leo X), and on the left as an older man when he was Pope. Giulio was elected to the papacy on 19 November 1523, and took the title Clement VII. Giulio's likeness as the young cardinal is derived from a painting in the Uffizi, Florence, by Raphael in which he stands facing the other way, behind a seated Pope Leo X;1 the depiction of Giulio as Pope Clement is derived from Sebastiano del Piombo's portrait in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.2
