The paper support has been laid onto canvas. The paint surface is secure and stable, the varnish appears clear and even. There is a slight degree of wear throughout the shadows beneath the saint's chin. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals a thick varnish that fluoresces opaque. There is visible a campaign of retouches on top of this varnish, any earlier restorations under the opaque varnish are not visible. The retouching that are visible are concentrated to the dark tones outlining the saint's left hand-side, and to a web of sensitively executed retouchings to a damage consisting of concentric circles where the saint's hand rests upon the skull. There are other smaller scattered restorations and retouchings mainly in the background, but overall the canvas is in fair condition. This lot is offered in a carved and giltwood frame in good condition.
