Description

  • Follower of Sir Anthony van Dyck
  • The Lamentation
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface secure and stable. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye. Much of the blue pigment that would have made up the cloak of the Virgin and the sky above the group has not lasted. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals three well restored damages, one in the top right corner of the canvas measuring 3 by 8 inches, one to the lowered hand of the angel on the right measuring 6 by 3 inches, and a third to the left of the Virgins head with three thin restored tears going out of it - each about 3 inches in length. Visible under ultraviolet light are also some further more minor restorations and some scattered retouchings throughout.
"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above.
