Condition
The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The panel is slightly bowed and had been treated on the reverse. The paint surface is uneven and discoloured. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows the painting to have an extremely opaque varnish layer and retouchings are visible mostly to the left of the woman and around the lower and upper framing edges. There are other scattered retouchings. The painting is in relatively good condition. The work is framed.

Catalogue Note
This painting is undeniably related to the double portrait of similar dimensions traditionally given to Jan Boeckhorst in the Schönborn collection, Pomersfelden - the composition is almost a direct mirror image, although the sitters are different.1 Its spontaneous and sketch-like nature suggests this portrait is either a preparatory study or an unfinished work, formed of the primary paint layer. As most known preliminary oil sketches for portraits tend to be smaller, the latter possibility seems more likely.
1. Oil on panel, 85 by 69.5 cm.; see H. Vlieghe, in Jan Boeckhorst, exhibition catalogue, Antwerp 1990, p. 72, reproduced fig. 40. Writing most recently, Maria Galen has attributed the portrait to Jacob van Oost the Younger (M. Galen, Johann Boeckhorst, Hamburg 20ℱ12, p. 420, cat. no. A63, reproduced).
