Description

  • Domenico Corvi
  • The Madonna and Child attended by Saints and Bishops
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Phillips, 5 December 1989, lot 54, where purchased by the current owner.

Literature

L. Gallo in Domenico Corvi, exhibition catalogue, V. Curzi and A. Lo Bianco (eds.), Viterbo 1998, p. 86, under cat. no. 9.

Condition

The canvas has been relined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is only slightly discoloured - the colours remain bright and strong. There is a superficial vertical surface scratch, measuring approx. 12 cm., between the Madonna's head and the putti (the top of which is just visible in the catalogue illustration). There are miniscule scattered pinprick losses lower left, around the hand of the bishop, and above his head. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching in the foreground, particularly in the lower left corner; more minorly in the robes and faces of the bishop and the Madonna; in the monk's habit; and throughout the clouds. In overall good condition.
