Condition
The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The panel is uncradled. The paint surface has a very fine craquelure pattern. There are a few
tiny losses in the lower right corner but the paint surface appears to be stable. The varnish layer is even. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows a few very thin spots and lines of retouching. Overall the painting is in good condition. The work is framed.

Catalogue Note
The composition is known in several versions, the best of which, formerly in the collection of Dr. Hans Wetzlar and now in a private collection, was attributed to The Master of the Magdalene Legend by Max Friedlander.1 The label on the reverse of the present painting confirms that it was this picture rather than the ex-Wetzlar work which was originally in the Sarre collection in Berlin, as Friedländer had thought, but the subsequent provenance for both works is most likely correct. Another weaker copy of this design was sold in these Rooms, 25 May 1988, lot 62.
