Condition
The panel is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is quite dirty and the varnish is slightly discoloured. There are two repaired vertical splits or joins, running the height of the panel either side of the sitter's head. There are several thin lines of paint loss in the sitter's arm and on the left side of the background, and there is discoloured retouching throughout the background (visible in the catalogue illustration). Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the vertical splits or joins, as well as scattered throughout the background, and most concentrated on the sitter's right side and in the lower right corner. There are scattered spot retouchings in the sitter's chin. In overall fair condition.
