The following condition report is provided by Hamish Dewar who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's: The panel is cradled. The paint surface is fragile with a large area of missing paint on the lower edge of the composition and a smaller area to the right of this. The paint surface is also uneven and has a discoloured varnish layer. Discoloured retouchings are also visible in natural light. Inspection under ultra-violet light shows an opaque and discoloured varnish layer and several scattered areas of retouching. Overall the painting is in reasonably good condition but these areas of fragile paint should be noted.
