Description
- Rotterdam School, early 18th century
- The fish seller; The poultry seller's wife
- the former signed and dated lower centre: Joc/Doc 16...
the latter dated lower centre: 16... - a pair, both oil on oak panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Bonhams, 28 October 2015, lot 101 (as circle of Gerrit Battem).
Condition
Both panels are flat, uncradled and stable. The varnish on both appears to be slightly patchy. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye - some retouching in the face of the woman is visible, as are a few very small discoloured retouchings scattered through the background of each picture, along with some small patches of minor wear. Inspection under UV light reveals that much of the womans face is repainted, and a patch of restoration in the background to the left of the man. There are a few retouchings at the very edge of each panel masking some minor frame abrasion. UV also confirms that the varnishes are patchy.
The panels are offered in matching gilt and carved wood frames in good condition.
