Description
- Pompeo Girolamo Batoni
- Truth and Mercy
- bears signature and date lower right on the stone: En Sueur 1646
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Paris, Estimations Ventes aux Encheres, 20 June 2005, lot 25 (where sold with its pendant, Peace and Justice, as studio of Batoni).
Condition
The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish discoloured. There is a pinprick loss on the right margin, centre, and on the stone on which the signature is inscribed. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals pinprick retouching throughout, particularly concentrated in the lower half of the painting. There is more recent retouching along all four margins, probably to disguise the appearance of frame abrasion. The painting is in overall good condition.
