Catalogue Note

Michele Marieschi painted several versions of this view, some of which include the quay and figures in the foreground, while others appear to be executed from a position on the canal itself, with the busy traffic of gondolas in front of the viewer. This is a copy after a composition by Marieschi with figures by Gian Antonio Guardi, with some small variations in the disposition of some of the staffage on the far bank and the number of chimney pots, sold London, Christie's, 13 December 1985, lot 101.1
